Air India Plans to Add Boeing Aircraft

Air India is exploring the acquisition of up to ten Boeing 737 MAX aircraft originally built for Chinese carriers but now left in limbo due to geopolitical trade frictions.

The Tata Group-owned airline is reportedly in active negotiations to secure the jets, which would be redirected to bolster its rapidly growing budget subsidiary, Air India Express. The potential deal, still under wraps but widely tracked within aviation circles, comes at a time when Boeing finds itself saddled with dozens of undelivered aircraft, as Chinese airlines halt intake in response to escalating tariff battles with the United States. Boeing executives recently confirmed that several customers in China are unwilling to proceed with deliveries, forcing the American aerospace giant to open the order book to alternate buyers.

India’s flag carrier, which is undergoing a historic transformation under the Tata Group’s stewardship, is now emerging as a likely suitor. Industry insiders indicate that if Air India secures the aircraft, deliveries could commence by 2026. The move would serve to plug a looming capacity shortfall and enhance fleet readiness, especially as Air India Express expands its footprint in short-to-medium haul markets across Asia and the Middle East. Air India Express, which currently operates 46 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, already has confirmed orders for 94 more 737-8s and 50 of the larger 737-10 variant. With demand surging post-pandemic, and domestic air traffic reaching record highs, the urgency for additional capacity is undeniable. Taking over undelivered aircraft is both cost-effective and operationally strategic, as it bypasses long manufacturing lead times.

The rerouting of aircraft orders comes in the wake of rising tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese imports, which prompted China to retaliate with a 125% import duty on American aircraft. This escalation stalled Boeing’s ability to deliver nearly 50 aircraft to Chinese clients, either completed or still on the production line. For Boeing, repurposing these aircraft is a logistical and financial priority. The aircraft maker’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to remarket the jets globally, highlighting robust demand among international carriers facing supply constraints and resurgent passenger demand.

For Air India, the acquisition aligns with a broader vision of sustainable, scalable growth. The airline has committed to modernising its fleet, improving fuel efficiency, and reducing its environmental impact—factors that play well into India’s net-zero ambitions and broader sustainable aviation goals. While this cross-border fleet transfer awaits finalisation, it illustrates the cascading effects of geopolitics on commercial aviation. It also reflects Air India’s re-emergence as a serious global player, one willing to capitalise on market dislocations to accelerate its resurgence.

Should the transaction proceed, it could mark a pivotal moment in India’s aviation journey—one that not only addresses immediate logistical needs but also signals the country’s growing influence in reshaping international aviation supply chains.
