Vande Bharat Train Launch Delayed Due to Heightened Security Measures

Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has been postponed due to escalating security concerns following the recent Pahalgam attack.

Originally slated for April 19, the inauguration has been deferred as authorities prioritise the safety of critical infrastructure and passenger security. In response to the attack, a comprehensive security framework has been established along the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This includes the deployment of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Indian Army personnel. High-value targets such as the Chenab Rail Bridge and Anji Khad Bridge are under constant surveillance, with snipers stationed to thwart any potential threats .

The Katra-Srinagar rail corridor holds significant strategic value. The Chenab Rail Bridge, standing at 359 metres above the riverbed, is the world’s highest railway bridge . Its elevation and location make it a potential target for adversaries, necessitating heightened security measures. The Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, also adds to the region’s critical infrastructure . The delay in the Vande Bharat Express launch has raised concerns among local businesses and the tourism sector. The train service was expected to boost tourism, trade, and horticulture in the Kashmir Valley, providing a fast and efficient travel option for passengers . However, the current security situation has overshadowed these economic prospects.

While the immediate focus remains on ensuring the safety of passengers and infrastructure, stakeholders are hopeful that the situation will stabilise, allowing for the timely launch of the Vande Bharat Express. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, support the local economy, and ensure year-round seamless travel in the region . In conclusion, the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express represents a significant advancement in India’s rail infrastructure. While security concerns have necessitated a delay, the long-term benefits of the project, including improved connectivity and economic growth, underscore its importance.
