Ahmedabad Plants 83 Lakh Trees in Five Years

Ahmedabad has planted over 83 lakh trees between 2020 and 2025 under the ‘Mission Million Trees’ initiative.

This extensive afforestation effort has increased the city’s green cover to approximately 12.5% of its total area, spanning 67 square kilometres. The initiative, marked by active citizen participation, aims to combat the urban heat island effect and enhance ecological balance. The city’s commitment to green infrastructure is evident in the development of over 2.68 urban forests and oxygen parks in the past five years. These green spaces not only provide recreational areas for residents but also contribute to improved air quality and biodiversity. The tree cover in Ahmedabad has grown from 6.4% in 2023 to 8.4% in 2024, reflecting a concerted effort to enhance urban greenery.

Despite these efforts, Ahmedabad continues to grapple with extreme heat. In April 2025, the city recorded temperatures soaring to 44°C, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert. The persistent high temperatures underscore the challenges posed by climate change and the need for comprehensive urban planning strategies that incorporate green solutions. Experts emphasize that while tree plantation is a vital step, it must be part of a broader, integrated approach to urban sustainability. This includes promoting energy-efficient buildings, enhancing public transportation, and implementing water conservation measures. Such multifaceted strategies are essential to mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure the well-being of urban populations.

The success of Ahmedabad’s afforestation drive serves as a model for other cities aiming to enhance their green cover. It highlights the importance of community involvement and sustained policy support in achieving environmental goals. As urban areas continue to expand, integrating green spaces into city planning will be crucial in building resilient and livable environments.
