Gujarat Bullet Train Project Achieves Major Progress

The Gujarat section of India’s ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has achieved a significant milestone, with 225 km of viaduct construction completed.

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) aims to finish all civil construction work in Gujarat by December 2025, marking a crucial step towards the nation’s first high-speed rail corridor. The 508 km corridor, which spans from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, will feature 12 stations, with eight located in Gujarat. The viaducts, which are elevated structures supported by piers, are integral to the project’s design, allowing the train to reach speeds of up to 320 km/h. These viaducts include bridges over six rivers in Gujarat: Par, Auranga, Purna, Mindhola, Ambika, and Venganiya.

In addition to the viaducts, significant progress has been made on other aspects of the project. The first mountain tunnel, measuring 350 meters, has been completed in Valsad district. Construction of a 160-meter bridge over the Kolak River in Valsad has also been finished, bringing the total number of completed river bridges to nine out of 24 along the corridor. The NHSRCL has also initiated the installation of noise barriers on the constructed viaducts to mitigate sound pollution. Furthermore, the laying of the first reinforced concrete track bed, using the Japanese Shinkansen technology, has commenced in Surat and Anand.

The project is being developed using Japan’s Shinkansen technology and is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a soft loan of ₹88,000 crore. The government aims to commence operations on the first phase of the bullet train between Surat and Bilimora by 2026. This milestone underscores the commitment to modernizing India’s transportation infrastructure and promoting sustainable, high-speed rail travel. As the project progresses, it is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
