Delhi and parts of Gurgaon, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled plans for a comprehensive elevated corridor stretching from the Indian National Army (INA) Market to the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road.
This ambitious project aims to provide a long-term solution to the persistent traffic jams plaguing South Delhi and its adjoining areas. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to span approximately 25 to 30 kilometers, with the majority of the route elevated to minimize land acquisition challenges. Certain sections may incorporate tunnels or underpasses to navigate densely populated areas and reduce surface-level disruptions. The project is designed to facilitate smoother connectivity between East and South Delhi, the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, thereby alleviating congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
This initiative is strategically aligned with the government’s broader vision to enhance urban mobility and infrastructure resilience. By decongesting critical corridors, the project aims to improve travel efficiency, reduce vehicular emissions, and bolster economic activities by ensuring seamless connectivity between key urban centers. Recognizing the ecological significance of the proposed route, the NHAI has committed to mitigating environmental impacts. The project will necessitate the felling of approximately 417 trees; however, compensatory afforestation measures are in place, including the planting of 4,170 saplings, to offset the ecological footprint. Additionally, the tunnel sections are planned to traverse beneath the Southern Ridge, a designated forest area, necessitating clearances under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.
While the detailed project report (DPR) is under preparation, initial estimates suggest that the elevated corridor could incur costs upwards of ₹4,500 crore. The NHAI is expediting the bidding process to commence construction at the earliest, with an emphasis on completing the project within the stipulated timelines to address the mounting traffic challenges. The proposed elevated corridor by NHAI represents a forward-thinking approach to urban infrastructure development, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance connectivity, and contribute to sustainable urban mobility solutions in the Delhi-NCR region. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to balance developmental objectives with environmental stewardship to ensure a harmonious integration into the urban landscape.
