Ghodbunder Road Traffic Diversions Due to Gaimukh Repairs

The Thane Traffic Police have announced significant traffic diversions to facilitate crucial repair works at Gaimukh Ghat. The repair work, which began on the night of April 29, 2025, is expected to continue until May 1, 2025, with diversions in place during this period.

The repairs, which involve advanced techniques like Cement Grouted Penetration Macadam (CGPM) and Cement Base (CB) methods, are being carried out to enhance road durability and ensure smoother travel. However, these necessary improvements come with a temporary inconvenience for commuters, especially heavy vehicles traveling through this busy route. The police have outlined a series of detours and alternative routes to mitigate the impact on traffic flow, especially during peak hours.

The Gaimukh Ghat section, located along the Thane-Ghodbunder Road (State Highway No. 84), has long been a bottleneck due to its narrow lanes and heavy traffic, particularly with the increase in vehicles during rush hours. The repair works aim to address these issues by providing a more stable and safer road surface, but the closure of specific entry points for heavy vehicles is expected to cause delays. As per the official traffic notification, several key entry points will be closed temporarily to ease congestion and facilitate smoother movement for both light and heavy vehicles. For those heading towards Ghodbunder Road from Mumbai or Thane, entry points at Y Junction and Kapurbawdi Junction will be restricted, forcing vehicles to take alternative routes. Heavy vehicles traveling towards Ghodbunder will need to use a bypass that passes through Nashik Road and Anjur Phata.

Meanwhile, traffic coming from Mumbra or Kalwa will face diversions at Kharegaon Toll Naka, with the underpass route available for alternative access. Similarly, vehicles from Nashik heading towards Ghodbunder Road will be redirected via Mankoli Bridge. On the return leg from Ghodbunder to Thane, heavy vehicles from Gujarat, Mumbai, Virar, and Vasai will encounter similar restrictions, with diversions routed through nearby localities such as Kaman and Mankoli to bypass the affected areas. The diversions are set to be in effect from late evening on April 29, 2025, until the conclusion of the repair work on May 1, 2025.

While the temporary detours may cause minor disruptions, officials are hopeful that these changes will ultimately result in long-term benefits for the region. The repair work at Gaimukh Ghat is expected to improve the overall quality of the road, reduce wear and tear, and enhance safety for all types of vehicles. By ensuring that this critical section of the road is well-maintained, the authorities aim to reduce the likelihood of accidents and breakdowns, contributing to a smoother and more efficient travel experience for daily commuters.

This repair work is part of a larger effort by the Thane Municipal Corporation and other local authorities to upgrade the city’s infrastructure, which includes improving key roadways and ensuring a more sustainable and eco-friendly transport system. In line with this broader vision, the authorities have been emphasising the need for better road planning, reducing the carbon footprint of vehicles, and encouraging the use of greener transportation alternatives wherever possible. While the diversions are undoubtedly a short-term inconvenience, residents and commuters can look forward to smoother, safer roads once the work is completed.
