PM Modi Launches Vizhinjam Port to Boost Economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 2, 2025.

This Rs 8,800 crore project, developed under a public-private partnership with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), is poised to redefine India’s position in global trade. Situated approximately 10 nautical miles from one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, Vizhinjam Port boasts a natural depth of 18 to 20 meters, allowing it to accommodate large vessels without extensive dredging. This depth is a significant advantage, as it eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming dredging operations, a common challenge for many ports.

The port’s proximity to key transport networks further enhances its strategic value. It is located just 2 km from a national highway, 12 km from a broad-gauge railway line, and 15 km from the Trivandrum International Airport, facilitating seamless connectivity for cargo movement. The inauguration of Vizhinjam Port marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to bolster its maritime capabilities. The port is expected to handle 1 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) annually in its first phase, with plans to expand capacity to 6.2 million TEUs in subsequent phases. This expansion is projected to position the port to handle 15% of India’s container transshipment traffic, challenging established hubs like Colombo and Dubai.

The project is anticipated to generate approximately 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to Kerala’s economic growth and supporting the state’s vision of becoming a $1 trillion economy. Vizhinjam Port is India’s first automated port, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities capable of handling large ships. The port features advanced technologies, including eight ship-to-shore cranes and 23 cantilevered rail-mounted gantry cranes, setting a new benchmark in port operations.

The implementation of these technologies is expected to significantly reduce vessel turnaround times, enhancing operational efficiency and positioning Vizhinjam as a critical player in international trade routes. In alignment with India’s commitment to sustainable development, Vizhinjam Port has been designed with environmental considerations at the forefront. The port’s natural depth reduces the need for dredging, minimizing environmental disruption. Additionally, the project’s adherence to green building standards and the integration of renewable energy sources underscore its commitment to sustainability.

The inauguration of Vizhinjam Port represents a significant leap forward in India’s maritime infrastructure, enhancing the nation’s position in global trade and logistics. With its strategic location, advanced technological capabilities, and commitment to sustainability, Vizhinjam Port is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s maritime sector.
