Chennai Metro Porur Line Needs Shuttle Support

Chennai The upcoming 9.1 km stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project, connecting Poonamallee to Porur, is set to open by December 2025. However, residents and commuters express concerns about the lack of connectivity to the existing Phase I network, particularly the Vadapalani station, which serves as a crucial interchange point.

The Poonamallee to Porur stretch, part of Corridor 4, will feature 10 elevated stations, including Karayanchavadi, Iyyapanthangal, and Porur Junction. While the infrastructure is nearing completion, the absence of a direct link to the Phase I network raises questions about the line’s initial ridership potential. Urban planners and commuters suggest that operating shuttle services between Porur and Vadapalani could address this gap. These services would facilitate seamless transfers between the two phases, enhancing the metro’s accessibility and encouraging higher patronage.

A resident of Iyyapanthangal emphasized the need for such services, stating, “There are many from Iyyapanthangal and Poonamallee to Saidapet and Kilpauk metro stations for work. All these people will resort to using the Poonamallee-Porur corridor only if a frequent shuttle service is available.” Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials acknowledge the concerns and are considering temporary shuttle services until the Porur to Kodambakkam stretch is completed. However, the timeline for this extension remains uncertain, with some estimates suggesting a delay until mid-2026.

The success of the Poonamallee to Porur corridor hinges on effective integration with the existing metro network. Implementing shuttle services and ensuring interoperability between the two phases could significantly enhance the metro’s utility and contribute to the city’s sustainable urban mobility goals.
