The United Kingdom has allocated £89 million in funding to propel 20 innovative net-zero technology projects, marking a significant stride toward strengthening the country’s position as a global leader in zero-emission vehicle technology. These projects encompass a wide array of advancements, including hydrogen-powered off-road vehicles, lithium scale-up plants and electric vehicle (EV) battery systems.
The funding package is a collaborative effort, with £45.2 million coming from the government and an additional £42.7 million from the automotive industry. The projects funded under this programme are divided into four collaborative research and development (R&D) projects, five scale-up projects and seven feasibility studies. This strategic approach aims to not only advance technology but also assess the readiness of businesses in the automotive sector for expansion.
Among the noteworthy recipients of collaborative R&D funding is Aston Martin, which is accelerating the development of a luxury battery electric vehicle platform. Perkins is another beneficiary, with plans to create a net-zero hydrogen-hybrid integrated power system for off-road vehicles.
These investments not only stimulate private sector involvement but also align with the government’s ambition to foster a complete end-to-end supply chain for zero-emission vehicles in the UK. It complements the ATF’s efforts to develop a high-value electrified automotive supply chain encompassing giga factories, battery material supply chains, motors, power electronics and fuel cell systems.
These projects range from a zero-emission Ariel Nomad, an off-road performance vehicle with an optimised electric powertrain, to a UK-manufactured electric scooter by Swifty Scooters, designed for superior rider safety and product longevity.
