Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has announced the rationalisation of 32 bus routes, aligning with the operationalisation of Metro Line 3.
This strategic overhaul aims to improve last-mile connectivity, reduce passenger wait times, and integrate bus services seamlessly with the metro network. The revised bus network will see the augmentation of 13 routes, diversion of six, extension of three, and curtailment of ten, resulting in a total of 1,241 daily trips. This restructuring is expected to reduce average passenger wait times by up to 15 minutes, providing a more efficient and reliable public transport experience.
BEST’s strategy includes deploying additional buses and proposing fare revisions to offset financial challenges. The revised operations will connect metro stations with suburban rail hubs and commercial centres, integrating the bus network seamlessly with the operational metro corridors. This initiative is part of a broader plan to transform Mumbai’s public transport system. BEST aims to introduce 175 new feeder bus routes to connect metro stations with densely populated areas. Additionally, the fleet is set to become 100% electric by 2027, with the introduction of 900 electric double-decker buses to enhance capacity during peak hours.
The integration of bus services with the metro network is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable urban mobility. By providing efficient and eco-friendly transport options, BEST is contributing to the development of a zero-carbon, gender-neutral, and equitable city. As Mumbai continues to expand its metro network, the rationalisation of bus routes is a crucial step towards creating a cohesive and sustainable public transport system. The collaboration between BEST and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation underscores the commitment to enhancing commuter convenience and promoting environmental sustainability.
