Chennai Metro Readies for Phase-2 with Flexible Train Design

In anticipation of the forthcoming Phase-2 expansion, the Chennai Metro Rail (CMR) has devised a flexible approach to accommodate varying passenger demands. While the initial plan for Phase-2 was to operate three-coach trains, CMR has now prepared the groundwork to couple two sets of three-coach trains, creating six-coach configurations when passenger demand surges.
Phase-2, encompassing a 116 km stretch with three distinct corridors, will see the operation of both three-coach and six-coach trains. Currently, the bidding process for this project is underway, with one contract already awarded.
The decision to introduce flexible train configurations reflects the lessons learned from the unexpected surge in passenger numbers during Phase-1 and Phase-2 extension projects. Initially, CMR will introduce three-coach trains as part of the project’s launch. However, the approach allows the coupling of two three-coach trains to form a six-coach configuration when the demand escalates.
The dynamic approach not only enhances flexibility of the Chennai Metro system but also ensures the efficient allocation of resources in response to fluctuating passenger needs. It aligns with CMR’s commitment to providing a seamless and comfortable travel experience for its passengers as it embarks on the Phase-2 project. As Chennai prepares for the next chapter in its Metro rail journey, the introduction of adaptable train configurations demonstrates the city’s proactive approach to urban mobility.
