Delhi Airport Boosts Capacity as Runway Reopens

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has resumed full operations with the reopening of Runway 28/10 on May 6, 2025.

This development marks a significant step in enhancing the airport’s capacity and operational efficiency. The runway had been closed since April 8, 2025, for upgrades to its Instrument Landing System (ILS) to CAT III B standards, enabling operations in dense fog conditions. The closure led to increased congestion and delays, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The reopening of Runway 28/10 is expected to alleviate these issues by restoring the airport’s full capacity to handle up to 90 flights per hour under favourable conditions.

This enhancement is crucial as IGI Airport continues to serve as a major hub for domestic and international travel. The airport’s operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has also undertaken other infrastructure improvements, including the refurbishment of Runway 10/28 and the development of a fourth runway with an elevated cross taxiway. These initiatives aim to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 100 million and its airside capacity to 140 million.

The completion of these upgrades underscores Delhi Airport’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and accommodating the growing demand for air travel. As the monsoon season approaches, the improvements are expected to mitigate weather-related disruptions and improve the overall passenger experience. With all runways now operational, IGI Airport is better equipped to manage increased traffic and provide timely services to passengers, reinforcing its status as one of the busiest and most advanced airports in India.
