Chennai Peripheral Ring Road to Enhance Regional Connectivity

The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) is a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in Tamil Nadu.

Spanning approximately 132.87 kilometers, this six-lane, access-controlled expressway is being developed by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) at an estimated cost of ₹12,301 crore. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The CPRR will serve as Chennai’s fourth ring road, connecting key towns such as Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Tamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam, Puduvoyal, and Kattupalli. The expressway will link major national highways, including NH5 (Chennai–Tada), NH4 (Chennai–Bengaluru), NH45 (Chennai–Tiruchi), and the East Coast Road (ECR), facilitating seamless travel across the region.

As of early 2025, construction is progressing steadily. The 30.1-kilometer stretch from Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur is nearing completion, with contractors L&T and SPK Ltd making significant headway. Section 4, connecting Sriperumbudur to Singaperumalkoil, has already been completed. The final stretch from Singaperumalkoil to Mamallapuram is set to commence soon, with land acquisition and tendering processes underway. The CPRR is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Chennai by providing an alternative route for long-distance and freight traffic. This will not only reduce travel time but also improve air quality by minimizing vehicular emissions in urban areas. Additionally, the project is anticipated to stimulate economic growth by enhancing access to industrial zones and promoting real estate development in peripheral towns.

Upon completion, the CPRR will be Chennai’s first access-controlled highway, incorporating an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to manage traffic efficiently and ensure road safety. The expressway’s design speed of 120 km/h will facilitate swift and safe travel, positioning the CPRR as a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s transportation infrastructure.
