Indian Railways has launched a dedicated Parcel Cargo Express Train (PCET) service between Agartala in Tripura and Ludhiana in Punjab, marking a significant milestone in boosting trade and commerce between the Northeast and the rest of India.
The new service, which is expected to operate weekly, will provide a much-needed logistical boost to the region, facilitating the movement of goods efficiently across long distances. The first cargo train, which departed from Agartala, carries an initial load of 364 tonnes, with plans to increase its capacity to 484 tonnes within six months. This increase will be contingent on the rising volume of products being transported along the route. The train is expected to cover a distance of 2,768 km in 90 hours, offering an efficient and reliable solution for the transportation of goods to and from the region. The service will operate four times a month, completing a total of 313 trips annually. This service is projected to generate an estimated revenue of ₹198 crore, bolstering the economic vitality of the region.
The cargo train service is part of a broader initiative to integrate the Northeast with national markets, facilitating the movement of essential commodities such as tea, bamboo, plastic granules, and FMCG products from Agartala to Ludhiana. Conversely, goods like cycles, hosiery products, electronics, shoes, and sanitary items will be transported from Ludhiana, Delhi, and Guwahati to Agartala. This exchange aims to enhance the supply chain for essential consumer goods and agricultural products, providing greater access to larger markets for producers in the Northeast. AVG Logistics, the private logistics partner, secured a six-year contract to operate the service, underscoring the public-private collaboration driving this ambitious project. The company’s role in ensuring smooth operations and efficiency will be crucial in meeting the demand for cargo transportation in the region. The service is particularly significant for local agricultural producers who previously faced challenges in transporting perishable goods to far-off markets in North India. The train’s efficiency will play a pivotal role in ensuring the timely delivery of such products, contributing to the growth of the agricultural and allied sectors in the Northeast.
This initiative also aligns with India’s broader goals of promoting sustainable and green logistics. By providing a more reliable and cost-effective alternative to road transport, the new cargo service will help reduce the carbon footprint associated with goods transportation.
