The Maharashtra government has granted approval for Phase One of the Uttan Virar Sea Link (UVSL) project.
This decision is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between North Mumbai and the northern suburbs. The UVSL project, part of the broader Mumbai Ring Road initiative, aims to create a 55-kilometre corridor featuring a 24-kilometre sea link and 30.77 kilometres of connecting roads. The sea link will comprise eight lanes (four in each direction) with emergency lanes, designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and reduce travel time between Uttan, Vasai, and Virar.
One of the key features of the UVSL is its integration with other major infrastructure projects. The sea link will connect with the North Coastal Road from Versova to Dahisar and the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road at Uttan. This strategic alignment is expected to ease pressure on the Western Express Highway and Link Road, providing motorists with alternative routes and improving overall traffic flow in the region. Incorporating state-of-the-art technology, the UVSL will feature navigational spans for maritime traffic, ensuring the movement of vessels remains unhindered. The bridge will also be equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System (TMS), leveraging Artificial Intelligence-powered cameras to monitor traffic and manage usage efficiently. Additionally, a 1.2-kilometre tunnel near Arnala Fort in Virar will provide an alternative route, further enhancing connectivity.
The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹87,400 crore, with funding expected from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the UVSL has been submitted to the Maharashtra government for final approval, and construction is anticipated to commence upon clearance. The approval of Phase One of the Uttan Virar Sea Link marks a significant step towards improving Mumbai’s infrastructure and addressing the growing transportation needs of its residents. Once completed, the sea link is expected to transform travel dynamics in the region, contributing to economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for commuters.
