Mumbai Faces Yellow Alert Amidst May 7 Weather Disruptions

Mumbai on Tuesday evening, leading to disruptions across various sectors.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, forecasting light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h. The city experienced a rapid change in weather conditions, with gusty winds and dust storms reducing visibility and causing traffic snarls. In Dahisar, a piece of cloth was blown onto the Western Railway’s overhead equipment, temporarily affecting train services. Suburban train operations were delayed, and several flights were diverted or delayed due to poor visibility at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

While coastal Mumbai saw light drizzle, areas such as Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Lower Parel, Bhayandar, and Powai reported moderate showers. Residents shared footage of strong winds blowing construction material and forcing bikers to take shelter. The IMD cautioned that the thunderstorm was expected to continue for the next 3-4 hours, with isolated places in the affected districts experiencing lightning and moderate spells of rain. This unexpected weather event underscores the challenges posed by climate variability and the need for robust infrastructure to withstand such disruptions. It also highlights the importance of timely weather forecasting and public awareness to mitigate the impact of sudden weather changes on daily life.

As the city braces for more unpredictable weather patterns, authorities are urged to enhance preparedness and resilience to ensure the safety and convenience of residents and travelers alike.
