Bihar Adds Madhuban as 262nd Urban Body

In a significant boost to Bihar’s urbanisation strategy, the state government has upgraded Madhuban village in East Champaran to a nagar panchayat, officially making it the 262nd urban local body.

The decision reflects the state’s ongoing push toward structured civic development and improved infrastructure in emerging urban centres. Urban development and housing department secretary Abhay Kumar Singh confirmed that the newly created nagar panchayat will span 552.94 hectares, covering Madhuban and Vishunpurtara villages. With this elevation, Madhuban joins the growing list of towns being brought under the umbrella of systematic urban governance. The government has outlined a comprehensive plan to provide the area with essential civic infrastructure, including road networks, street lighting, and a regulated water supply system. Officials said the move is expected to improve economic activity, enhance access to education and healthcare, and lay the foundation for sustainable urban living while preserving the region’s cultural fabric.

Urban development and housing minister Jibesh Kumar stated that the new status will allow Madhuban to benefit from state-backed town-level development initiatives. “Urbanisation is accelerating across Bihar. With the formation of Madhuban nagar panchayat, the total number of such bodies has now reached 155. Our department remains committed to delivering high-quality civic amenities to all,” he said. According to the 2011 Census, the area has a population of 16,391. The newly defined geographical boundaries place Banki Tikam to the north, Koilhara to the south, Saraiya to the east, and Talimpur to the west.

The move is part of Bihar’s broader goal to improve urban living standards by bringing more rural settlements under structured governance models, fostering inclusive growth across districts.
