PMC Unveils Plan for Double Decker Flyovers

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in collaboration with Maha-Metro and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), has announced the construction of ten new double-decker flyovers across key city junctions.

These structures will feature metro rail tracks on the upper level and vehicular lanes below, ensuring better utilisation of vertical space in congested corridors. This initiative follows the successful model of Pune’s Nal Stop flyover on Karve Road, which integrates metro and vehicular lanes. The upcoming flyover at Ganeshkhind Road—connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar—is also nearing completion and is expected to further decongest the city’s IT corridor. According to reports, the proposed flyover sites include Mundhwa–Mahatma Phule Chowk, Solapur Road–Kalubai Chowk, Dandekar Pul Chowk, Awhalwadi Chowk in Wagholi, Warje–Ambedkar Chowk, Bhusari Colony–Kothrud Bus Depot, Golibar Maidan Chowk, Viman Nagar Chowk, Fatimanagar Chowk in Wanowrie, and Ravidarshan Junction in Manjari.

In a related move, the state government has cleared the extension of an elevated double-decker flyover from Phoenix Market City in Viman Nagar to Kharadi. The decision adds a crucial 5-kilometre segment to the project, benefiting commuters in an area marked by dense traffic from tech parks, commercial spaces, and arterial routes like the Hadapsar bypass. Bapusaheb Pathare, MLA from Vadgaon Sheri, welcomed the approval, calling it “a major win for the community.” He said the extension would significantly relieve mounting congestion in the rapidly developing neighbourhood. The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will oversee construction of the extended flyover as part of the Pune–Shirur elevated highway development.

The rollout of these integrated flyovers positions Pune as a frontrunner in multi-level urban mobility planning, providing long-term solutions to the city’s growing transit demands.
