Sakinaka Waterlogged After 20 Minute Rain Spell

A brief but intense spell of rain on Wednesday brought Mumbai’s Sakinaka area to a standstill, with streets around the metro station waterlogged and choked with debris.

Visuals shared by the Chandivli Citizens Welfare Association (CCWA) showed vehicles wading through filthy water, igniting widespread criticism of the city’s drainage infrastructure and monsoon preparedness. “This is the reality despite @mybmc’s budget of ₹75,000 crore,” CCWA posted on social media platform X. “One shower and the system collapses.” Founder Mandeep Singh Makkar said the flooding led to traffic congestion and revealed a pattern of incomplete civic work. “This is just a few kilometres from the international airport. Politicians arrive for ribbon-cutting but vanish afterwards, leaving citizens in flooded chaos,” he said.

Another user, @weworkngo, posted: “Heavy rainfall has turned Sakinaka Metro Station into a nightmare! The streets are flooded, littered with debris, and vehicles are struggling to move. Urgent action is needed.” In its defence, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) attributed the flooding to a high-intensity 15–20-minute cloudburst in Sakinaka and Chandivali. It said floating waste in the Safed Pool stormwater channel caused Nalla No. 10 to overflow, leading to about nine inches of waterlogging for nearly half an hour. BMC officials said desilting work is already underway on Nalla No. 10, which flows through a densely populated slum belt. The civic body insisted that pre-monsoon cleaning had begun months earlier, but illegal garbage dumping by residents continues to choke storm drains, undermining their efforts.

Despite annual pre-monsoon cleanups, waterlogging in Mumbai remains a recurring issue, raising questions about the efficacy of the city’s infrastructure and accountability of civic authorities. With the official monsoon season yet to begin, citizens fear this early incident could be a sign of worse to come.
