Tiruchi Takes Step Towards Sustainable Waste Management

In a forward-looking move to address the mounting issue of construction and
demolition (C&D) waste, Tiruchi Corporation has initiated the process to
establish a state-of-the-art recycling plant in Ariyamangalam. The plant’s
objective is to systematically collect, process and repurpose building debris
within the city, marking a significant stride toward sustainable waste
management.

Recognizing the escalating challenge posed by the accumulation of construction
waste, the civic body has revived its long-pending proposal to set up this
recycling facility. Spanning two acres of land within the Ariyamangalam dump
yard, the project is estimated to cost INR6 crore.

Tiruchi city, sprawling over 163.25 sq km, generates approximately 470 mt of
waste daily, with C&D waste accounting for up to 25 tonnes. While the concept
of establishing the city’s inaugural construction waste recycling plant was
initially conceived in 2020, its realization was impeded by a lack of interest
among recycling plant operators.

To ensure effective implementation, the Corporation will collaborate with a
private agency experienced in recycling C&D waste. This agency will be
responsible for collecting debris from builders and residents, transporting it to
the plant, and processing it to create flooring tiles and pavement blocks.

This pioneering effort by Tiruchi not only resolves the challenge of
indiscriminate C&D waste disposal in water bodies and vacant areas, but also
promises revenue generation through the DBFOT system.
