Pune PCMC allocate Rs 250Cr for 500 new PMPML buses

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) have committed ₹150 crore and ₹100 crore respectively to procure 500 new buses for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML).

The announcement was made under the directive of Pune District Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar. This financial push is aimed at addressing growing commuter demand and the ageing bus fleet. “The current PMPML fleet is inadequate for the city’s rising passenger numbers,” Pawar said, confirming plans to source the buses from Tata Motors, which has offered reduced rates given its Pune base. In addition to the 500 new buses, the state is also exploring the purchase of 500 electric buses with central government assistance. “Our goal is to add 1,000 buses to the fleet soon, improving service quality and reducing environmental impact,” Pawar added. Pawar had earlier directed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to allocate ₹230 crore to PMPML, of which a portion has already been utilised. New buses funded through that tranche have begun arriving.

While instructing municipal commissioners to expedite the fund transfer, Pawar acknowledged the financial constraints of both civic bodies. “We’re taking contributions only within their capacity,” he noted. PMPML has long been criticised for delayed services, frequent breakdowns, and insufficient buses. The new fleet, including electric models, is expected to significantly enhance reliability, reduce fuel costs, and lower emissions. Electric depots at Charholi and Mann are already operational, with some electric buses in service.

The development has been widely welcomed by civic groups and environmentalists, who argue that strengthening mass transit is key to managing Pune’s urban growth and reducing its environmental footprint.
