Tata Motors has taken a major step towards sustainable urban mobility by launching its latest Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Kolkata.
The new centre, named ‘Re.Wi.Re – Recycle with Respect’, is set to dismantle up to 21,000 end-of-life vehicles each year and represents a significant milestone in India’s circular economy agenda. Designed with cutting-edge technology and environmentally responsible protocols, the facility aims to phase out old and polluting vehicles in line with the national vehicle scrappage policy.Strategically located in eastern India, this facility is Tata Motors’ eighth such centre across the country and the third in the region, following Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. It is operated by Tata’s authorised partner, Selladale Synergies India Pvt. Ltd., and stands out for its fully digitalised operations. From registration to vehicle de-registration and recycling, every step is managed through a seamless paperless system that ensures transparency and efficiency.
Equipped with specialised dismantling zones, the plant is capable of responsibly disposing of tyres, batteries, lubricants, and gases, adhering strictly to safety and environmental norms. This not only reduces emissions and landfill waste but also enables the recovery of valuable materials. The initiative is a direct response to the Centre’s push for green urban infrastructure and the transition towards cleaner transportation.The facility was inaugurated in the presence of senior officials from the Government of West Bengal and Tata Motors. Government leaders underscored the role of scrappage centres in fostering a cleaner and safer mobility ecosystem while boosting employment and industrial activity at the local level. Tata Motors representatives highlighted the company’s growing capacity, now exceeding 1.3 lakh vehicles annually across its eight centres. This reinforces the automaker’s position as a key driver in India’s shift towards sustainable and smart mobility.
The opening of the Kolkata facility also aligns with India’s broader commitment to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in urban zones. By systematically removing aging vehicles from circulation, these centres not only support automotive renewal but also help build climate-resilient cities.
