Mumbai inaugurated Phase 2A of Metro Line 3, connecting Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli.
This 9.77-kilometre underground stretch promises to transform the city’s commute, reducing travel time between these bustling hubs to just over 15 minutes. The newly operational segment, part of the larger 33.5-kilometre Aqua Line, features six underground stations: BKC, Dharavi, Shitla Devi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli. Trains will run every six minutes and twenty seconds, with eight trains making 244 trips daily. Fares range from ₹10 to ₹40, depending on the distance travelled
Metro Line 3 introduces the “Twin Booted Low Vibration Track – High Attenuation” system, a first in India, designed to minimise operational noise and vibrations. This technology is particularly beneficial in a densely populated city like Mumbai, where reducing the impact on surrounding structures is paramount . The trains themselves are equipped with advanced features, including air-conditioned coaches, digital route maps, audio announcements, and LCD screens for travel information. Safety measures such as CCTV surveillance, fire detection systems, and full-height platform screen doors enhance passenger security. Additionally, the stations are designed with inclusivity in mind, offering facilities like baby-changing stations and wheelchair-accessible spaces .
Beyond improving commute times, Metro Line 3 is poised to make a substantial environmental impact. By providing a reliable alternative to road transport, the metro is expected to reduce vehicular trips by approximately 665,000 per day, leading to a decrease in fuel consumption by 354,000 litres daily and a 35% reduction in road traffic . The metro’s development aligns with the city’s goals of creating a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment. By integrating advanced technology and prioritising sustainability, Metro Line 3 sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects in India.
The final stretch of Metro Line 3, extending from Worli to Cuffe Parade, is under construction and expected to be operational by August. Once completed, the full corridor will significantly ease the load on Mumbai’s suburban network and road traffic, further enhancing the city’s public transportation landscape .
