Indian Railways Approves Survey for New Sikkim Railway Line

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for a new railway line in Sikkim from Melli to Dentam, passing through Jorethang and Legship.

The ₹2.25 crore survey, to be undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), aims to expand the railway network to the under-served southern and western regions of Sikkim. This initiative was announced following sustained efforts by Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba and has received direct backing from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The proposed 75-km line will serve as a critical extension of the under-construction Sivok–Rangpo railway corridor, which is expected to be operational by 2027. The project is envisioned to bridge a crucial infrastructure gap, connecting remote towns such as Dentam, located close to the Indo-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, with the national rail network.

According to NFR officials, Melli is poised to function as the key junction for the planned expansion, ensuring seamless integration of West and South Sikkim into the national transport grid. The FLS will determine the technical feasibility, alignment, engineering requirements, and financial estimation for the route. This proposed rail line is anticipated to boost regional development by improving accessibility, enhancing tourism, facilitating trade, and generating local employment in areas such as Gyalshing and Jorethang.

“Once operational, the new railway line will be a transformative step for West Sikkim, significantly improving mobility and economic integration,” said a statement from Northeast Frontier Railway. Tendering for the FLS execution is expected to begin shortly.
