Pune Railway Yard Revamp Blueprint Finalised

The Indian Railways has finalised a comprehensive blueprint for the long-awaited remodelling of Pune Railway Station, signalling a major infrastructure overhaul aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency.

The project will modernise yard infrastructure, extend platforms, and introduce new ones to handle the rising commuter load. According to railway officials, the primary phase of the project is slated to begin between February and March next year, following years of planning and delays. Tenders for several components are expected to be floated soon, indicating a firm step towards execution. The project had previously been delayed due to high passenger traffic during summer holidays, with the administration opting to postpone the work to prevent inconvenience. Pune remains a key transit point for travellers arriving from other states, especially during peak travel seasons. To reduce future disruption, the Railway Ministry has set deadlines for development works at Hadapsar and Khadki railway stations. These terminals are being upgraded to serve as alternative hubs during the construction phase.

“As part of the yard remodelling, we will construct two new platforms and extend four existing ones to accommodate longer trains,” a senior railway official said. “The Engineering Department has finalised the technical design, and tendering will follow to ensure a smooth start. Minimising inconvenience during peak periods remains a top priority.” During the active construction phase, a number of train services may face cancellations or rerouting. In response, authorities plan to divert some train operations to Hadapsar and Khadki, aiming to cushion the impact on commuters. While there is general support for the modernisation, passengers are also anxious about potential travel disruptions. Sunil Jadhav, a frequent commuter, expressed cautious optimism: “The Pune Railway Station badly needs an upgrade, so I welcome the plan. But as a daily train user, I worry about cancellations. Clear planning and timely updates are critical to avoid confusion, especially for officegoers.”

The remodelling has been under discussion for several years, and with the blueprint now finalised, railway officials stress the importance of steady execution and transparent communication. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve Pune’s rail infrastructure and accommodate future growth in traffic, making the city’s station better equipped for long-term urban demands.
