Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is poised to introduce a network of green spaces and playgrounds within one of Asia’s most densely populated areas.
This initiative aims to address the longstanding scarcity of recreational areas for children and residents in Dharavi, fostering a healthier and more sustainable community. Historically, Dharavi’s children have made do with makeshift play areas amidst congested lanes and cramped spaces. The DRP’s master plan envisions a departure from this norm by integrating expansive parks and community playgrounds throughout the Dharavi Notified Area (DNA). These green zones are strategically planned to be within walking distance for all residents, ensuring equitable access to open spaces that promote physical activity and social interaction.
An official associated with the project highlighted the significance of this development, stating that the inclusion of green spaces is not merely an aesthetic enhancement but a fundamental shift towards improving the quality of life for Dharavi’s inhabitants. Approximately 150,000 tenements are slated for rehabilitation, with efforts focused on providing modern housing solutions that incorporate sustainable design principles.
