The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is set to transform 103 railway stations across the country, with a substantial focus on Mumbai.
The initiative aims to enhance passenger experience by providing world-class amenities and integrating stations into the urban fabric of the city. Mumbai’s railway network, a lifeline for millions, is poised for a major facelift. Under the Amrit Bharat Scheme, 12 key stations on the Central Railway line, including Parel, Chinchpokli, Matunga, and Vadala Road, are slated for redevelopment. These upgrades are part of a broader plan to modernize 56 stations across Maharashtra, with a total investment of over ₹15,000 crore.
The redevelopment plans include the construction of new station buildings with modern and inviting designs, installation of modular Sewage Treatment Plants for better environmental hygiene, resurfacing and beautification of platforms with captivating landscaping, improved passenger amenities, better connectivity with the introduction of lifts and escalators, and modernized train indication boards and signages for easy navigation. The Amrit Bharat Scheme envisions transforming railway stations into integrated transport hubs that seamlessly connect with other modes of transport. This approach aims to reduce congestion, improve accessibility, and promote sustainable urban development.
The inclusion of vertical gardens, green spaces, and energy-efficient lighting aligns with the city’s goals of creating eco-friendly and sustainable urban spaces. A key aspect of the redevelopment is the emphasis on accessibility for all passengers, including those with disabilities. The upgraded stations will feature ramps, tactile maps, accessible toilets, and dedicated spaces for differently-abled individuals. Additionally, family-friendly amenities such as children’s play areas and baby care rooms are being incorporated to cater to the diverse needs of passengers. The modernization of railway stations is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by attracting tourists and boosting local businesses.
