PM to Inaugurate Rs 20000 Crore Locomotive Plant in Dahod

Prime Minister will visit Gujarat on May 26 and 27 to inaugurate a ₹20,000 crore high-horsepower locomotive manufacturing plant in Dahod, solidifying the region’s emergence as a national hub for indigenous rail production.

The two-day visit will also include key public engagements in Gandhinagar and Kutch. Modi will headline a public rally in Bhuj’s Mirzapar Road and visit the Ashapura Mata Temple at Mata no Madh. The major highlight, however, remains the unveiling of India’s first 9,000-horsepower electric locomotive, developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with a global firm that secured the project through a competitive bidding process. The Dahod plant, a first-of-its-kind facility, is slated to manufacture 1,200 locomotives over the next decade. Each engine will be branded “Manufactured by Dahod,” aligning with the ‘Make in India’ vision and aiming for future exports. The locomotive is capable of hauling up to 4,600 tonnes of cargo and will include driver-centric features such as air-conditioning and toilets—unprecedented in Indian rail history.

The engines will also be equipped with advanced collision avoidance systems, further boosting operational safety. Currently, four locomotives are nearing completion at the Dahod unit, which is expected to create over 10,000 jobs across manufacturing, engineering, and auxiliary services. The plant’s establishment is anticipated to catalyse economic activity in Gujarat’s tribal belt, particularly in the power and mechanical sectors. The visit follows Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent trip to Gujarat, where he inaugurated several development projects, including urban infrastructure, healthcare, and security schemes in cities like Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit underscores the Centre’s continued focus on high-impact infrastructure and industrial growth, while reinforcing Gujarat’s role in India’s push towards self-reliance and sustainable economic development.
