Mumbai Metro 3 ridership crosses 4.7 lakh in 10 days

Mumbai’s first underground metro system has witnessed a promising response following the Phase 2 launch of Metro Line 3, with nearly 4.7 lakh passengers recorded in just ten days.

The stretch from Aarey to Acharya Atre Chowk, opened to the public on May 10, has been averaging over 47,000 daily commuters, according to data from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). The second phase, which covers a 9.77 km route between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Acharya Atre Chowk, includes six operational stations. It marks a major improvement in east-west connectivity, especially between Aarey and Worli Naka. The MMRC has announced plans to make the entire 33.5 km corridor from Aarey to Cuffe Parade operational by August this year. Since October 7, 2023—when the first phase was opened—Mumbai Metro 3 has recorded over 47 lakh passengers. Of these, 4,70,533 commuters used the metro between May 10 and May 19 alone. Specifically, 2,04,042 passengers travelled on the newly launched BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk route in the nine days following its launch.

The route has become especially popular among devotees visiting the Siddhivinayak Temple, offering them a faster and more convenient mode of transport. This surge in passenger traffic indicates growing public confidence in the underground metro system, which is expected to significantly decongest the city’s surface traffic. Once fully operational, Metro Line 3 is projected to serve 13 lakh passengers daily, transforming Mumbai’s public transit landscape. The MMRC continues to monitor ridership trends and operational efficiency as it gears up for the final phase of the launch.

With the addition of each new segment, the Mumbai Metro 3 is steadily shaping up to become a cornerstone of the city’s urban infrastructure.
