PM To Inaugurate Haibargaon Station

Prime Minister will virtually inaugurate the redeveloped Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam’s Nagaon district on May 22, 2025, as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), alongside 102 other upgraded stations across India.

The event marks a significant push in modernising the country’s railway infrastructure and improving travel experiences in the Northeast. Originally built in 1887, Haibargaon station served as a key hub during the colonial era, supporting tea trade and education in the region. Now redeveloped under ABSS, the station blends cultural heritage with world-class amenities and is being hailed as a model of infrastructure transformation in Assam. During a pre-inauguration inspection on May 20, senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) presented the station’s upgrades to local media and residents. Many elderly visitors, who remembered its coal-engine past, were visibly impressed by the comprehensive overhaul.

Among the highlights of the redevelopment are a grand entrance porch, a newly built station building, a spacious concourse, modern waiting halls, modular toilets including Divyangjan-friendly facilities, and a refreshment room. Baby feeding corners and ramps for universal access are also part of the new design. The platforms have been resurfaced, the circulation area reorganised with dedicated parking for different vehicles, and pedestrian pathways have been clearly demarcated. Enhanced lighting, updated signage, improved public announcement systems, and curated murals reflecting Assam’s heritage now characterise the station. In addition to physical improvements, the station is expected to play a larger role in regional connectivity and tourism. With easier access to key destinations like Kaziranga National Park, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, and Bordowa Than, the redeveloped station aims to boost footfall and local commerce. A dedicated kiosk under the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative is also being introduced to promote local goods.

According to NFR, the redevelopment of Haibargaon is part of a wider upgrade of 50 stations in Assam. The project reinforces Indian Railways’ vision to merge infrastructure with inclusivity and heritage, offering passengers both modern comforts and a sense of regional identity. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to revitalise railway infrastructure and enhance the role of smaller stations in economic development.
