GHMC clears illegal stalls between Asif Nagar and Jhirra Road

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Thursday dismantled illegal encroachments along footpaths between Asif Nagar and Jhirra Road, aiming to ease traffic congestion and restore pedestrian access.

The demolition drive targeted unauthorized sheds and structures that had mushroomed along the roadside, obstructing both foot and vehicle movement. Heavy police presence was deployed throughout the operation to prevent resistance or disturbances, given the sensitive nature of the enforcement. JCB machines were used to remove the encroachments, some of which had stood for years despite repeated complaints from residents. GHMC officials said the encroachments were a major source of public inconvenience and posed safety risks. “Footpaths are meant for pedestrians, not for private or commercial occupation. These illegal structures were contributing to daily traffic snarls and endangering lives,” a senior official stated.

Civic authorities have warned that the operation is only the beginning. Similar demolition drives are set to be conducted along the Mehdipatnam to Mallepally junction in the coming days, with a firm message to encroachers: influence or status will not shield violators from action. “No one will be spared. Those who illegally occupy public spaces will face immediate removal and potential legal consequences,” GHMC officials said, urging citizens to report violations and support the city’s efforts to ensure safe and accessible public infrastructure. The drive has drawn support from several residents who have long complained about shrinking pedestrian space and unregulated stalls blocking key junctions. Local shopkeepers, however, expressed concerns about the lack of alternative spaces and sought time to relocate.

As Hyderabad continues to face mounting urban pressure, GHMC’s crackdown signals a renewed push for order, accessibility, and pedestrian rights in the city’s crowded streets.
