Northeast to Receive Rs 1000 Crore for Waterways Development

The Indian government has announced an additional ₹1,000 crore investment to enhance inland waterways infrastructure across Assam and the broader Northeast region by 2026.

This strategic move aims to bolster connectivity, promote sustainable economic growth, and position the Northeast as a key maritime hub in line with the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways emphasized the critical role of the Northeast in India’s development agenda. The newly allocated ₹1,000 crore will supplement the ₹1,000 crore already invested over the past two years, with ₹300 crore completed and the remaining ₹700 crore set for completion by the end of 2025. These funds will support the development of terminals, navigation systems, and related infrastructure across the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, facilitating improved cargo and passenger movement.

The government’s initiative aligns with its commitment to sustainable development. Projects under this plan include the construction of modern terminals, dredging operations to maintain navigable channels, and the establishment of riverine lighthouses. Additionally, the development of cruise terminals and water metro services in cities like Guwahati and Dhubri aims to boost tourism and local economies. These projects are designed to integrate environmental considerations, promoting eco-friendly transportation options. Recognizing the importance of local communities, the Centre plans to establish Regional Centres of Excellence (RCoE) in Dibrugarh and Guwahati. These institutions will focus on skill development in inland water transport, preparing the youth for employment opportunities in the growing sector. Moreover, the initiative is expected to generate employment, particularly in sectors such as shipbuilding, maintenance, and tourism.

The development of inland waterways is poised to reduce logistics costs and enhance trade connectivity within the region and with neighbouring countries. By improving the navigability of rivers like the Brahmaputra and Barak, the government aims to facilitate smoother movement of goods, thereby boosting trade and economic activities. This initiative also aligns with regional cooperation efforts, fostering stronger ties with neighbouring nations through enhanced connectivity. The Centre’s ₹1,000 crore investment in Northeast India’s inland waterways infrastructure underscores a commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and regionally integrated development. By focusing on modern infrastructure, skill development, and environmental sustainability, the government aims to transform the Northeast into a vital component of India’s maritime future. This initiative not only promises economic benefits but also reflects a holistic approach to regional development, ensuring that growth is both inclusive and environmentally responsible.
