New Kuthambakkam Bus Terminal to Boost Connectivity

The Kuthambakkam mofussil bus terminal, a ₹414 crore project near Thiruvallur, is set to become operational in the coming months.

Developed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the terminal is being constructed on a 25-acre site and is expected to serve as a major hub for west-bound buses, including services operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The terminal is designed to accommodate 136 bus parking bays, 64 idle bays, and 44 commercial shops. Additional facilities include dormitories for bus crew, public amenities, and a 36-metre-wide, 2.2-km-long access road from National Highway 4, covering an extra 18.20 acres and bringing the total development area to 52 acres. The project aims to ease traffic congestion at existing terminals and provide a modern, efficient facility for passengers.

In line with sustainable development goals, the CMDA plans to make the Kuthambakkam bus terminal a net-zero emission structure. The initiative includes the installation of a 10-megawatt solar plant to generate 30,500 units of electricity daily, contributing to the terminal’s energy needs and reducing its carbon footprint. The terminal will be managed under a 15-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP). A private concessionaire will be appointed to oversee operations and maintenance, including managing bus bays, public amenities. The concessionaire will be allowed to generate revenue, while retaining full responsibility for service quality.

The CMDA has also taken steps to ensure seamless traffic flow around the terminal. Discussions with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are underway to plan access roads and avoid congestion. The terminal is expected to alleviate pressure on the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu and improve connectivity for passengers traveling to western Tamil Nadu and beyond. With the completion of the Kuthambakkam bus terminal, Chennai is set to enhance its transport infrastructure, providing passengers with a modern, efficient, and sustainable facility that meets the growing demand for travel services.
