Karnataka Launches Circular Economy Cluster

Karnataka made an announcement regarding the establishment of a circular economy cluster in the state and extended an invitation to Fraunhofer, a German research society renowned for operating 76 institutes dedicated to various fields of applied science, to participate in this initiative.

The state government is committed to the circular economy and its efforts to devise strategies that encourage businesses to adopt circular production models. The circular economy has been integrated into key state policies, including the startup policy, urban solid waste management policy of 2020, Karnataka registered vehicle scrapping policy of 2022, and the e-waste management rule of 2022. All these policies aim to promote early adoption and invigorate the circular economy.

Anandi Iyer, Director of Fraunhofer India, highlighted the organization’s mission to contribute to India’s thriving innovation landscape by blending fundamental research with industry collaboration. She emphasized the role of Fraunhofer in facilitating the swift transition of cutting-edge research into market-ready solutions, emphasizing their commitment to driving innovation at an accelerated pace.

Dr. Markus Wolperdinger, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology, stressed the need for a shift from the predominantly linear economic model to a circular approach. He advocated for a circular bio-economy, extending beyond the use of renewable resources to encompass a comprehensive integration of diverse technologies and methodologies.

The establishment of a circular economy cluster in Karnataka, along with international collaborations, underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable resource management.
