Red Alert Issued as Goa and Maharashtra Face Torrential Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Goa and parts of Maharashtra following the formation of a low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the coasts of south Konkan and Goa.

The alert signals the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall over the weekend, particularly in coastal and ghat regions. The system, which may intensify into a depression, could further evolve into a cyclonic storm depending on atmospheric and oceanic developments. Already, Panjim recorded 9 cm of rainfall on Thursday, marking the beginning of an intense wet spell expected to continue through Sunday, May 25. While Goa is under a red alert, several Maharashtra districts face varying levels of warning. Raigad and Ratnagiri have also been placed on red alert for Friday, while Mumbai is on an orange alert till Saturday, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 60 kmph. The same warning applies to Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara.

In Thane district, heavy rains damaged road surfaces along the Bhiwandi-Wada route, resulting in severe traffic congestion. Road construction activity further compounded the problem, raising concerns over commuter safety and mobility. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that the State Disaster Management Authority has activated 24×7 control rooms in both North and South Goa to monitor the unfolding situation and extend support wherever needed. Elsewhere, the national capital is also expected to see mild weather disruptions. Delhi will experience light to very light rain with thunderstorms and wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph late Friday, possibly touching 60 kmph in some areas.

With the pre-monsoon system strengthening along India’s west coast, authorities have urged residents in affected regions to stay alert and follow official advisories as rainfall activity is set to intensify.
