KRCL Powers Faster Travel Along Western Coast

The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Railways, has emerged as a critical transport backbone for India’s western coast.

Operational since 1990, KRCL functions independently of Indian Railways and spans 741 km from Roha in Maharashtra to Mangaluru in Karnataka, traversing the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats through Goa and coastal Kerala. Established with the goal of rapid infrastructure development, KRCL operates under a joint venture model involving the Government of India (51%), Maharashtra (22%), Karnataka (15%), and both Goa and Kerala (6% each). This structure has enabled swifter decision-making and execution, particularly important for projects navigating the complex topography of the Konkan region.

Built through a region historically isolated due to its geographic barriers, the Konkan Railway has dramatically shortened travel time for passengers and freight, strengthening economic integration along the coast. Its construction involved several engineering breakthroughs, including numerous tunnels and viaducts, highlighting India’s indigenous technical capabilities. Unlike Indian Railways’ 17 zonal divisions—now 19 when including Metro Railway and Kolkata—KRCL functions outside this traditional structure. Indian Railways is divided into 70 divisions, each headed by a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), while each zone is managed by a General Manager (GM).

The Konkan Railway continues to serve as a model of infrastructure innovation and decentralised execution in India’s transport sector.
