The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a monumental infrastructure project spanning 210 kilometres, is set to redefine travel between Delhi and Dehradun.
With the final phases nearing completion, the expressway promises to cut travel time from over six hours to just 2.5 hours, ushering in a new era of connectivity and sustainability. Originating from Akshardham in Delhi, the expressway traverses through pivotal towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur, before reaching Dehradun in Uttarakhand. This strategic alignment not only enhances inter-state connectivity but also integrates seamlessly with major highways like the Eastern Peripheral and Delhi-Meerut Expressways, creating a robust road network in northern India .
The expressway’s construction is divided into four phases. Phases 1 and 4 have been completed and are operational, while Phases 2 and 3 are in the final stages. A notable feature of the expressway is the 12-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor over Rajaji National Park, the longest of its kind in Asia. This corridor ensures safe passage for wildlife, including elephants, mitigating the impact of the expressway on the park’s ecosystem . Designed as a six-lane controlled-access corridor, the expressway boasts 113 underpasses, five railway overbridges, and 62 bus shelters. It also includes a 340-metre three-lane tunnel near Datkali in Dehradun, enhancing safety and traffic flow. The expressway is engineered for a minimum speed of 100 kilometres per hour, with amenities such as trauma centres, ambulances, and fire brigades strategically placed every 25–30 kilometres .
The expressway is poised to stimulate economic growth by improving access to markets, reducing logistics costs, and creating job opportunities. It is expected to boost tourism in Uttarakhand by providing a faster route to popular destinations like Mussoorie, Haridwar, and Rishikesh, thereby supporting the state’s tourism and hospitality sectors . In line with the government’s vision for sustainable infrastructure, the expressway incorporates eco-friendly materials and green technology to reduce its environmental impact. The elevated wildlife corridor and other design elements reflect a commitment to preserving the region’s biodiversity while enhancing connectivity .
