Uttar Pradesh Plans 62 New Projects to Ease Traffic

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced an investment of ₹6,124 crore for the construction of ring roads, bypasses, and flyovers aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road connectivity across the state.

The initiative is part of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s broader vision to transform the state into ‘Uttam Pradesh’ by significantly strengthening its transport infrastructure. A government spokesperson stated that the plan involves integrating key national highways with expressways and major state highways to create a comprehensive road grid across UP. This initiative seeks to minimise commute times, streamline freight movement, and improve travel safety and comfort in urban areas. The Public Works Department (PWD) has finalised a detailed infrastructure roadmap for the 2025–2026 fiscal year. Under the new scheme, 62 projects have been prioritised for immediate execution. Areas with high population density and vehicular traffic will receive primary focus, while already well-connected municipalities will be excluded from the current phase.

Officials confirmed that the layout includes the development of ring roads, flyovers, and underpasses in cities facing chronic traffic jams and bottlenecks, such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Agra, Varanasi, Bareilly, and Gorakhpur. The initiative is also expected to support upcoming industrial parks and special economic zones across the state, catering to future demands from the logistics, warehousing, and freight transport sectors. The government sees this infrastructure expansion as a critical step toward achieving its $1 trillion economy goal.

The Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department’s blueprint specifically prioritises cities with populations between one and ten lakh to ensure equitable infrastructure development across emerging urban centres.
