Maharashtra Offers Heavy Incentives to Boost EV Adoption

The Maharashtra government has launched the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2025, offering substantial financial incentives to both EV manufacturers and buyers.

The policy promises up to ₹2 lakh in direct incentives depending on the type of electric vehicle purchased and registered in the state. As per the policy, buyers of electric two-wheelers will receive up to ₹10,000, while electric three-wheelers are eligible for ₹30,000. For electric cars, non-transport (private) vehicles can avail benefits of ₹1.5 lakh, whereas transport vehicles are eligible for the full ₹2 lakh incentive. The scheme is applicable to a limited number of vehicles in each category during the policy period. In addition to monetary incentives, all EVs sold and registered in Maharashtra will be fully exempt from motor vehicle tax. The state will also waive toll charges for electric passenger vehicles on major routes including the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Atal Setu. The policy envisions the development of Sustainable Transport Corridors linking Mumbai with Pune and Nagpur.

The policy introduces stringent mandates for EV charging infrastructure. All new residential buildings must ensure 100% of parking spaces are EV charging-ready with appropriate pre-wiring and space allocation. Commercial buildings must allocate at least 50% of parking for charging infrastructure. Existing commercial properties with shared parking must have 20% operational EV charging points. Further, all new residential complexes must include one community EV charging point. The state will issue dedicated fire safety protocols in consultation with the fire advisor to ensure the safe setup of EV chargers. All special planning authorities, including MIDC, are required to align their building approval processes with the policy to ensure consistent implementation.

The policy is expected to accelerate Maharashtra’s transition to electric mobility, reduce urban emissions, and set a model for sustainable infrastructure development in India.
