GMDA Receives Approval to Fell 1300 Trees for Metro Construction

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has secured approval to fell 1,300 trees along the proposed metro corridor between Millennium City Centre and Hero Honda Chowk.

This decision, while facilitating the ₹5,452 crore metro project, has raised environmental concerns among residents and activists. The GMDA anticipates receiving clearance for an additional 500 trees from Hero Honda Chowk to Sector 9. In response to the environmental impact, the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has committed to planting approximately 18,000 trees across 17 hectares in developing sectors of the city.

This compensatory afforestation plan aims to offset the ecological footprint of the project. The 28.5-km metro line, connecting HUDA City Centre to Cyber Hub via Old Gurugram, is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and promote sustainable urban mobility. However, the removal of trees has prompted discussions about the balance between development and environmental preservation. Environmental experts emphasize the importance of stringent monitoring and adherence to green building codes to ensure that the compensatory plantation efforts are effectively implemented.

The success of this initiative will be crucial in determining the project’s overall environmental impact. As the metro project progresses, it will be essential for all stakeholders to collaborate in maintaining the ecological integrity of Gurugram while advancing urban development.
