Dahods 9000 HP Locomotive Sets New Railway Standard

The Dahod workshop in Gujarat has unveiled the nation’s first 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive.

This development marks a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards sustainable and efficient freight transportation. The 9000 HP locomotive is designed to revolutionise freight operations by hauling up to 4,500 tonnes of cargo at speeds up to 120 km/h. This capability is expected to increase the average speed of freight trains from the current 20-25 km/h to approximately 50-60 km/h, significantly enhancing efficiency and reducing congestion on existing tracks.

Manufactured under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the Dahod facility is set to produce 1,200 such locomotives over the next eleven years, with an estimated investment of ₹26,000 crore. This project not only aims to bolster domestic freight capacity but also positions India as a competitive player in the global railway manufacturing market. The collaboration with Siemens, a global leader in railway technology, ensures the integration of advanced propulsion systems and regenerative braking technology. These features contribute to energy savings and a reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with India’s commitment to sustainable development.

The introduction of these high-powered locomotives is anticipated to create approximately 3,500 direct and 7,000 indirect employment opportunities, fostering economic growth in the Dahod region. Additionally, the project is expected to enhance the technical skills of the existing workforce through training and development programs. As India continues to invest in infrastructure and technological advancements, the Dahod workshop’s 9000 HP locomotive stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to modernising its transportation sector and achieving its sustainability goals.
