Paris has unveiled TOMRA’s latest innovation—the Reuse Collection Point (RCP)—at the Reuse Economy Expo.
This automated system is designed to streamline the return of reusable takeaway food containers, marking a pivotal step in reducing single-use packaging waste. The RCP operates as a reverse vending machine, accepting QR-coded reusable containers such as cups, bowls, and boxes. Upon return, consumers receive instant deposit refunds directly to their mobile wallets or credit cards, enhancing user convenience and encouraging participation in the circular economy.
This initiative builds upon the successful pilot program in Aarhus, Denmark, where over 1 million reusable cups were returned within 17 months, achieving an impressive 85% return rate. The Aarhus model demonstrated the feasibility and public acceptance of a city-wide reusable packaging system, providing a blueprint for Paris and other cities aiming to implement similar sustainable practices. TOMRA’s Rotake system, integral to the RCP, offers a comprehensive solution encompassing the collection, transportation, sanitization, and redistribution of reusable containers. Each container is tracked via serialized QR codes, ensuring full traceability and enabling detailed reporting on return rates and environmental impact.
The integration of this technology aligns with broader European efforts to foster circular economies and reduce environmental footprints. By facilitating the reuse of packaging, cities can significantly cut down on waste, lower carbon emissions, and promote sustainable consumer behaviors. Looking ahead, TOMRA plans to roll out the RCP system more broadly by the first quarter of 2026, with potential applications in various urban settings, including large events and public venues. This expansion underscores a growing commitment to innovative solutions that support environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.
