Wind and Solar Overtake Coal and Gas in Europe Power Mix

For the first time, wind and solar power have surpassed the combined contribution of coal and gas in Europe’s electricity generation, marking a critical turning point in the continent’s green energy transition.

The development comes amid a record-breaking $2.1 trillion global investment in low-carbon energy in 2024, reshaping energy systems across Europe, the United States, and China. Data compiled from regional electricity markets show that the share of wind and solar exceeded that of traditional thermal power sources during the first half of 2024. Analysts attribute this shift to increased capacity, falling technology costs, favourable weather, and accelerated regulatory action to phase out fossil fuels. The drop in coal and gas usage also follows mounting pressure from climate commitments and energy security concerns amplified by recent geopolitical disruptions. Many European countries have aggressively retired coal plants while limiting new gas projects, instead investing heavily in renewables and grid upgrades.

“This isn’t just a symbolic milestone—it reflects years of deliberate policy, massive financial support, and strong public backing for a cleaner future,” said a senior analyst at a European energy think tank. While Europe leads the shift, the United States and China are also undergoing parallel transformations. In both countries, solar and wind installations hit historic highs in 2024, supported by favourable government schemes, technology advances, and private sector commitments. Despite the positive outlook, energy experts caution that grid reliability, seasonal variability in renewable generation, and storage capacity remain key challenges. However, Europe’s latest power mix data signals growing confidence in the ability of renewable energy to deliver at scale.

As the world races toward net-zero goals, Europe’s progress in decarbonising its power sector stands out as both a benchmark and a roadmap for emerging economies.
