Pune Metro Plans New Routes for Better Airport Access

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) is set to expand Pune’s metro network with new routes aimed at improving access to key areas, including Lohegaon Airport.

These developments are part of a broader initiative to enhance public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the city. One of the primary proposals is the extension of the metro line from Kharadi to Pune International Airport. This new corridor is expected to provide direct metro access to the airport, facilitating smoother travel for passengers and reducing reliance on road transport. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha-Metro to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this extension. The proposed route would integrate into the existing Khadakwasla–Swargate–Hadapsar–Kharadi corridor, creating a seamless connection from Khadakwasla to the airport .

In addition to the airport link, other proposed routes include a metro line from Katraj to Hinjawadi and the development of Kharadi as an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity to southern parts of Pune and provide efficient transit options for commuters. The Kharadi hub is envisioned to facilitate seamless transfers between different modes of transport, enhancing the overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network . To ensure the best transport solutions are chosen, Maha-Metro has commissioned an Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The AAR will evaluate various transport systems, considering factors such as cost, environmental impact, and integration with existing infrastructure. Based on the findings, the DPR will provide detailed plans for the proposed routes, including timelines and cost estimates .

These proposed expansions come as part of Pune’s broader efforts to enhance urban mobility and promote sustainable transport options. With increasing urbanisation and traffic congestion, the expansion of the metro network is seen as a crucial step towards creating a more efficient and eco-friendly transportation system in the city. As the Detailed Project Reports are developed and further planning progresses, residents and commuters can look forward to improved connectivity and reduced travel times across Pune. The proposed metro extensions are expected to play a significant role in shaping the city’s transportation landscape in the coming years.
