India Launches 9000 HP Electric Freight Locomotive

India has unveiled its first 9000 horsepower (HP) electric freight locomotive.

This advanced locomotive is designed to haul freight trains weighing between 4,500 and 5,000 tonnes at speeds up to 100 km/h, marking a substantial enhancement in the country’s rail infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony, held on May 26, 2025, in Dahod, Gujarat, was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event also marked the commencement of operations at the newly established locomotive manufacturing plant in Dahod, developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This facility is set to produce a fleet of 1,200 high-power electric locomotives in collaboration with Siemens Mobility .

The 9000 HP electric locomotives are equipped with state-of-the-art IGBT-based propulsion systems and regenerative braking technology, ensuring energy efficiency and reduced operational costs. These locomotives are expected to operate primarily on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and other graded sections of the railway network, significantly enhancing freight transport capacity and speed . The introduction of these high-power locomotives is anticipated to revolutionize freight operations in India. By increasing the average speed of freight trains and enabling the transportation of heavier loads, the new locomotives will alleviate congestion on existing tracks and improve overall logistics efficiency. This advancement aligns with the government’s goal of reducing logistics costs and enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industries.

Furthermore, the project is poised to create significant employment opportunities in the Dahod region. The establishment of the manufacturing plant and associated facilities is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, contributing to regional economic development . As India continues to modernize its rail infrastructure, the launch of the 9000 HP electric freight locomotive represents a pivotal move towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation system. This initiative not only underscores India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions but also positions the country as a leader in green rail development.
