Tamil Nadu Starts Repair On Landslip Hit Ghat Road

The Tamil Nadu State Highways Department has commenced emergency repair work at the ninth hairpin bend on the Yercaud ghat road after a landslip triggered by a retaining wall collapse created a hazardous hollow beneath the road.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, prompting immediate site inspections by Highways Department Superintending Engineer Sasikumar and Divisional Engineer Muthukumar. The team assessed the damage and directed workers to stabilise the area with sandbags as a temporary safety measure. Officials have erected barriers at the affected stretch and cautioned motorists to proceed carefully, as the road remains vulnerable to further disturbance. The department said repairs began on Thursday and are expected to be completed within a couple of days.

Assistant Divisional Engineer Siva Selvi from Yercaud confirmed that while immediate repair works are underway to secure the road, the construction of a permanent retaining wall is scheduled to begin in July. “Preparations are progressing and we are working on a long-term solution to ensure slope stability and road safety in the region,” she said. The Yercaud ghat road, a critical hill route connecting Salem with the popular hill station of Yercaud, is known for its steep bends and heavy monsoon vulnerability. Landslips and erosion in the area have been a recurring issue, particularly during the rainy season.

Officials have urged drivers to remain alert and follow traffic advisories until the stretch is fully restored. No injuries or accidents have been reported due to the collapse.
