IndiGo, the nation’s largest airline, has entered into a strategic partnership with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to establish a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
This collaboration underscores the airline’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and supporting the burgeoning aviation ecosystem in Bengaluru. Under the agreement, BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres of land to IndiGo for the development of the MRO infrastructure. The facility is designed to accommodate both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, aligning with IndiGo’s plans to expand its fleet beyond 600 aircraft by 2030. The MRO will be equipped with advanced support infrastructure, including an engine Quick Engine Change (QEC) shop, warehouse, and engineering offices, ensuring comprehensive maintenance capabilities .
This initiative is not IndiGo’s first foray into MRO development; the airline previously inaugurated a 13,000-square-metre MRO facility at KIA in November 2022, built on a five-acre plot. The existing facility can service two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously and includes essential support infrastructure . The new expansion signifies IndiGo’s proactive approach to meeting the increasing demands of its growing fleet and the broader aviation market. Kempegowda International Airport, operated by BIAL, has emerged as a pivotal aviation hub in India. With a strategic location and robust infrastructure, KIA handled over 41.87 million passengers and 502,509 tonnes of cargo in the fiscal year 2024-25 . The airport’s commitment to sustainability is evident, being Karnataka’s first fully solar-powered airport. The addition of the new MRO facility aligns with KIA’s vision to enhance its role as a premier aerospace and MRO hub in the region.
The collaboration between IndiGo and BIAL is poised to generate significant employment opportunities and foster skill development in the aviation sector. By investing in indigenous MRO capabilities, the partnership aims to reduce dependence on foreign maintenance services, thereby contributing to cost efficiencies and the overall growth of India’s civil aviation industry .
