PM Unveils Rs 47600 Cr Projects in Kanpur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 15 infrastructure projects worth ₹47,600 crore during his visit to Kanpur, in a significant move to boost urban connectivity, energy supply, and industrial growth in the region.

One of the flagship initiatives is the expansion of the Kanpur Metro with a new underground corridor between Chunniganj and Kanpur Central, worth over ₹2,120 crore. The stretch includes 14 stations—five of them subterranean—and will connect key locations like Z Square Mall, Green Park Stadium, and Somdutt Plaza, providing faster and cleaner urban transit. In the power sector, the Prime Minister inaugurated multiple high-capacity substations, including 132 kV facilities in Greater Noida’s Ecotech-8 and Ecotech-10, and laid the foundation stone for a 220 kV substation in YEIDA’s Sector 28 to meet growing energy needs. A major highlight was the inauguration of the ₹8,300 crore Panki Thermal Power Extension Project (660 MW) and three units of the ₹9,330 crore Ghatampur Thermal Power Project (totaling 1,980 MW), both aimed at bolstering power generation across Uttar Pradesh. Modi also inaugurated new rail overbridges at Panki Power House and Panki Dham crossings to streamline logistics for coal and oil transportation for thermal plants and ease traffic in the area. To address urban water reuse, he launched a ₹290 crore 40 MLD tertiary treatment plant in Bingawan, which will allow treated sewage to be recycled for industrial and other purposes.

Improving road infrastructure was also a focus, with foundation stones laid for the widening and strengthening of the Gauria Pali Marg and a four-lane road connecting Narwal Mode on the Prayagraj Highway to the Kanpur Defence Node. These developments are expected to enhance connectivity for the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor and ease movement for commercial and defence logistics. During the event, the Prime Minister distributed certificates and cheques to beneficiaries of key government schemes including the PM Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojna, the National Livelihood Mission, and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to inclusive growth. Ahead of the visit, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed all arrangements on the ground.

The multi-sectoral project rollout is seen as a strategic step to position Kanpur as a major node in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure, energy, and industrial development roadmap.
