Pune Allocates Rs 5.5 Crore for Nullah Cleanup

Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has allocated Rs 5.5 crore for the cleanup of nullahs and removal of encroachments across its 6,000 sq km jurisdiction.

The initiative, which also targets 23 villages recently merged into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), aims to address 189 identified encroachments and 125 flood-prone spots. Typically, pre-monsoon cleaning commences between January and February. However, this year’s delayed tendering process has postponed the cleanup efforts, necessitating work during the monsoon. PMRDA officials have indicated that the tender will be finalized within 15 days, with cleanup operations proceeding concurrently with the rains.

The overlapping responsibilities between PMRDA and PMC have led to coordination challenges. While PMRDA issues building permits in the merged villages, PMC is responsible for property tax collection and flood management. This jurisdictional ambiguity has been a point of contention among residents, who express concerns over the timely and effective execution of flood mitigation measures. In response to these challenges, a draft plan proposes the creation of a 7.5 to 9-meter-wide green belt with drainage gardens along affected drains. This initiative aims to enhance the city’s resilience against flooding while promoting sustainable urban development.

As the monsoon progresses, the effectiveness of these measures will be closely monitored, with both PMRDA and PMC emphasizing their commitment to collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety and well-being of Pune’s residents.
