Kanpur Metro Expansion Enhances Urban Mobility

Kanpur Metro’s Corridor I has been extended with the addition of five new stations, significantly enhancing urban mobility and connectivity in the city.

This development is part of a broader initiative to modernize public transportation and promote sustainable urban development. The newly inaugurated stretch, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, includes underground stations that showcase Kanpur’s industrial heritage through artistic displays. The extension aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a reliable mode of transportation for the city’s residents. Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has played a pivotal role in this project by supplying fully indigenously manufactured metro trains. These trains, built at Alstom’s Savli facility in Gujarat, feature advanced technologies such as the Mitrac propulsion system and Flexx bogies, ensuring energy efficiency and reduced operating costs.

Each three-car trainset accommodates approximately 960 passengers, providing a comfortable and efficient travel experience. The integration of Alstom’s Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system further enhances the metro’s efficiency and safety. The CBTC system supports automatic train operations, delivering smooth and connected travel, and meeting the growing transport demands of Kanpur’s population. This expansion aligns with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to indigenously developed infrastructure solutions. The project not only improves urban mobility but also contributes to the socio-economic development of the region.

As Kanpur continues to grow, the metro’s expansion is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and equitable urban future. The integration of modern, energy-efficient transportation options reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban planning and development.
